When Is Your Final Day On Earth?

“And now I have told you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe. I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming, and he has nothing in Me. But that the world may know that I love the Father, and as the Father gave Me commandment so I do. Arise, let us go from here” (John 14:29-31).

When is Your Final Day ON Earth? No one can answer this question because no one knows when their last day on earth will be. Jesus is speaking to his disciples concerning his death by crucifixion. This chapter introduces the entire Godhead and their roles to the disciples. As Jesus is about to depart and, in his preparation, he leaves his disciples “Peace” and “Comfort” by the Holy Spirit (vs. 27). Jesus speaks of the Holy Spirit, who is coming in his place to guide the disciples into God’s truth. So, he promised not to leave them as orphans (v. 18); The Spirit will be their helper and abide with them forever. Jesus says, He dwells with you and will be in you” (John 14: 16-17). The life of the Holy Spirit in the believer’s life is vast, so I will digress and move further into our topic.

In verse 29, “It” refers to Jesus’ sacrificial atonement on the cross. He was aware that his final day on earth was imminent. He desired that his disciples would mature in faith, not falter, and increase in knowing Him. The disciples needed to be encouraged to know that although the deceiver exists in the world, Jesus is greater (v.30). The last statement that Jesus makes in this dialogue with his disciples is that the world must know that he loves the Father and does what the Father commands. The disciples would need to model God’s love to the world and offer deliverance through Christ (Matt. 28:19-20). Jesus then quiets his voice and moves on.

What do our conversations entail? How much do we convey about the Lord's work in our lives?  Are we sharing what we have learned? Are we listening to the heartfelt cries of others? Are we teaching others how to obey God's voice? When do we quiet our voice and work while it is day (John 9:4)?

When will your last day “on earth, as it is in heaven” be (Matt 6:10)?

Today or tomorrow may be your very last breath on earth. Grow and spread the good news of Christ and be of good cheer because "Greater is He who lives in you than he that is in the world" (1 John 4:4).

Encourage and Be Encouraged!
